Bio

Alina Austin is an abstract painter based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Her work explores nature, connection and the beauty found in change, drawing from the natural world with an underlying focus on womanhood, inheritance, and the tension between instinct and control. She works in acrylic, oils and oil sticks, layering and reworking until a piece resolves in its own time. Alina’s practice continues to evolve through original bodies of work and limited fine art print releases.

Artist Statement

"My paintings begin with the natural world, but they are ultimately about connection, change and the experience of being a woman. I’m interested in inheritance — the things we carry from the women who came before us — and in the tension between instinct and control. Nature gives me a language for exploring these ideas through cycles, growth, decay, movement and the quiet beauty of things becoming something else.

I work intuitively with acrylic, oils and oil sticks, building each painting through layers of colour, texture and gesture. I rarely begin with a fixed outcome, instead adding, removing and reworking until the painting finds its own balance. Often, a work finishes far from where it began, while still holding traces of what came before.

Through this process, I explore what happens when control is loosened and instinct is allowed to lead. Rather than recreating the natural world, I use it to think about our relationship to ourselves, to one another, and to the changes that shape us over time".
